New to freight consolidation?

If your head is spinning, we’ll help get your questions answered.

What is consolidated freight?

Consolidated freight refers to full truckload or full container load shipments made up of multiple smaller shipments. This shipping strategy delivers key benefits—helping manufacturers and suppliers cut their shipping costs, boost transportation efficiency, and reduce their carbon footprint.

How does consolidated shipping work?

A consolidator arranges delivery of small shipments to a central location, where product piece counts are confirmed against POs before being combined into a single, larger load. The consolidated shipment is then transported to a second destination, where the load is broken down, or deconsolidated, and the smaller shipments are delivered to their final destination via local carriers.

What is an example of freight consolidation?

A consolidator might combine cases of wine originating from several California winemakers onto a single temperature-controlled truck. These bottles would then be delivered to a single wine distributor or big box liquor store—or to a second consolidation hub, where they’re broken down into smaller, combined shipments for delivery to small retailers.

Is consolidated shipping cheaper?

Yes. When sharing a trailer or container, suppliers and manufacturers only pay for the space they use—all while taking advantage of cheaper full truckload or full container load rates. This can result in significant cost savings over partial load freight rates.

Important caveat: Freight consolidation is a niche service. Consolidators without the requisite experience, robust technology, and strong safety culture are far more likely to make a mistake. Whether that error takes the form of an incorrect order or damaged freight, it can tarnish customer loyalty—costing shippers much more in the long run.

It’s critical to partner with experienced consolidators.

What services are included in freight consolidation?

A consolidator manages the entire shipping process from start to finish. Services include:

  • Carrier vetting
  • Shipment pickup coordination
  • Customs clearance
  • Shipment delivery to a freight consolidation hub
  • Order accuracy confirmation
  • Shipment consolidation
  • Delivery scheduling
  • Shipment monitoring
  • Deconsolidation
  • Load reworking and repackaging
  • Final delivery

Is a freight consolidation strategy right for your business?

Manufacturers and suppliers who realize the most benefit from freight consolidation include those who:

  • Deliver against time-sensitive shipping schedules
  • Regularly ship small, partial loads of up to 3 pallets
  • Transport high-value, fragile, or perishable freight
